FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a warranty on my silicone prosthesis?
Yes, all products have a 12-month warranty, except for liners and digits which come with a 90-day warranty. Please note that there is no warranty for acrylic nails. Misuse of the prosthesis may result in damage invalidating the warranty.
How realistic will the silicone look?
The silicone provides a realistic appearance that closely matches the sound limb. The customization can include realistic details such as hairs, freckles, moles, body art, and split toes. Additionally, the nails can be painted and the nail polish removed.
Will the silicone change color if I get a tan or if I am cold?
No, silicone cannot change colour with season, temperature or pressure. Because your skin's colour match depends on conditions that may constantly change—like skin temperature, blood circulation, and suntan—the cosmesis may sometimes look different compared to your other limb. Furthermore, silicone can look different under natural or artificial light.
Will the prosthesis be heavy?
Yes, silicone is much heavier than other materials. In some cases, such as an above-knee cosmesis, this weight may affect some gait patterns.
Will wearing a silicone prosthesis affect my mobility or component function?
The prosthesis is predominantly for cosmetic use and may reduce the functional element of the prosthesis. Due to the additional weight of the cosmesis, your clinician may advise the use of lighter, less functional components. These components might differ from your usual prescription and may not give you your normal gait. Additionally, silicone is less ideal over certain types of componentry, such as torque and shock absorbers, and can reduce the function of certain components.
How durable is the silicone, and will the color last?
Silicone is a strong and long-lasting material, and it is more resistant to staining than other finishes. However, it can tear along thinned edges. The cosmesis colours may fade a little with time. It will also pick up stains if not promptly removed, and contact with damp shoes and clothing may cause colour leach and staining of the cosmesis.
Why might the shape of my prosthesis not be an exact match to my sound limb?
Although we work to produce the best shape possible, sometimes we cannot achieve an exact match due to residual limb volume and the components and materials chosen. We may also need to make changes to your prosthesis—such as altering the size of the foot to ensure it fits the shoe you supply—in order to get the maximum benefit from the silicone cover.
